ThyssenKrupp Fleet Expands with Natural Gas, Hybrid-Electric Technology

ThyssenKrupp Elevator Americas has added new natural gas and hybrid-electric vehicles to its service fleet, building on the large complement of propane autogas vehicles that the company already operates.

As a part of this deployment, ThyssenKrupp integrated XL3 hybrid-electric systems from XL Hybrids Inc. into vehicles that are currently in use in Atlanta, Dallas and Boston. The XL3 system uses an electric motor, lithium-ion battery pack and control software to deliver a 25% increase in miles driven per gallon.

ThyssenKrupp is also using a new compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicle for company service mechanics at the Denver International Airport.

‘Reducing petroleum use in our 3,200-vehicle fleet is our most significant environmental impact to date. By October 2013, we saved over 710,000 gallons of gas and 115,000 gallons of diesel over our 2010 baseline,’ says Brad Nemeth, vice president of sustainability for ThyssenKrupp Elevator Americas.

The company rolled out its first propane vehicles in 2010, and it now runs about 50 ROUSH CleanTech Ford E-series vans and a handful of F-series trucks in Phoenix, Seattle, Los Angeles, San Diego and Detroit.
