Progressive Waste Solutions Ltd., a major refuse and recycling company, says it has deployed about 250 new natural-gas-powered heavy-duty trucks in its fleet in the last 15 months, bringing the firm's total number of compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles to nearly 400.

Progressive has a wide footprint in North America, and its CNG-powered trucks are currently in operation in 10 of its markets: Vancouver; Montreal; and Barrie, Ontario, as well as in St. Louis; New Orleans; Dallas; Tampa, Fla.; Natchitoches, La.; McKinney, Texas; and Haltom City, Texas. The company was recently awarded contracts in Frisco, Texas; Jefferson Parish, La.; and Brampton, Ontario, and anticipates that CNG trucks will be added to those fleets, as well.

All told, Progressive expects that about 550 natural gas vehicles will be in service by the end of next year. By 2019, up to 20% of its 4,000-truck fleet could be powered by natural gas, given that its annual fleet acquisitions are more than 50% NGVs.

Progressive notes that it has built company-owned CNG refueling capacity at a number of its facilities, and it intends to continue building CNG stations as its NGV fleet grows.
