XL Hybrids Inc., a developer of hybrid electric powertrain technology for commercial and municipal fleets, has installed its XL3 system in passenger vans for Lasell College in Newton, Mass.

The project was funded by the Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources as part of the Massachusetts Clean Cities initiative, and it includes the passenger vans, as well as a shuttle bus scheduled to be on the road in March.

Clay Siegert, vice president and co-founder of XL Hybrids, says, ‘The vans are the college's first alternative fuel vehicles, and we're confident Lasell will see immediate savings in fuel and vehicle maintenance.’

XL Hybrids claims its hybrid system will provide Lasell College with a 25% increase in miles per gallon and 20% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions.

“College President Michael Alexander signed a climate action plan which has sharpened our focus on sustainability efforts, and we hope to deploy more XL Hybrids vehicles in the future,” says Roxey Connelly, manager of plant operations for Lasell College, who notes that the institution has received several awards for its other sustainability work.
