Connecticut-based Norwich Public Utilities (NPU) has completed the installation of eight electric vehicle (EV) charging stations that are planned to be used for the utility's own fleet and also by the public.

This project contributes to NPU's extensive work related to alternative-fuel vehicles, much of which has been supported by the Norwich Clean Cities Coalition. NPU already has compressed natural gas and biodiesel vehicles in its fleet, and it recently added two plug-in hybrid EVs.

"Norwich Public Utilities and the Norwich Clean Cities Coalition have been leaders in the deployment of alternatively fueled vehicles," says Lee Grannis, coordinator of the Greater New Haven Clean Cities Coalition. "They have demonstrated, and continue to demonstrate, that there are choices available in reaching the goal of reduced U.S. dependence on foreign oil."

The EV charging stations are located at the utility's customer service center on N. Main St. in Norwich. Four of the eight Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment LLC chargers, which were installed by Bonner Electric, are open to the public.
