St. Landry Parish, La., has unveiled a new compressed natural gas (CNG) fueling station that draws from a methane-to-CNG conversion system at the parish's solid-waste disposal facility.

According to a report from Eunice Today, the gas collection system at the landfill - which went online in January 2009 - processes 300 cubic feet of methane per minute. The methane-to-CNG system uses some of that output to create CNG transportation fuel, at a rate of 250 gallons per day.

The St. Landry Sheriff's Office uses the CNG for its fleet of natural gas vehicles. The target is for the landfill CNG system, which was installed by BioCNG LLC, to produce enough fuel to support a fleet of 50 vehicles.

The report says the system has allowed the sheriff's office to save approximately $5,000 a month in fuel costs.
