Frito-Lay North America, a division of PepsiCo, says the 176 all-electric trucks in its fleet have collectively surpassed the 1 million-miles mark in commercial delivery service.

Frito-Lay's goal is to cut greenhouse gas emissions and fuel consumption in its 20,000-vehicle fleet 50% by 2020. The all-electric trucks from Smith Electric Vehicles are a part of that strategy and are used mainly on urban delivery routes. Frito-Lay is planning to buy 100 Newton Series 2000 all-electric commercial vehicles this year, also from Smith Electric Vehicles.

"The first million miles with the electric trucks have been a journey of understanding and refining both how and where we use these vehicles, as well as providing input to help improve upon the performance for the next-generation vehicle," says Mike O'Connell, senior director of fleet capability for Frito-Lay North America. "We are now in position to more quickly accelerate our strategy and grow the electric vehicle fleet."
