BYD Co. Ltd. says the University of Utah has placed an order for one of its 40-foot, all-electric GreenCity transit buses. The vehicle will run a 1.7-mile loop on the university's main campus.

The bus will be retrofitted with WAVE Inc.'s wireless charging pad, which was developed by the Utah State University Energy Dynamics Laboratory. This technology allows the BYD electric bus to stop above a wireless charger that is embedded in the asphalt to replenish the iron-phosphate batteries.

BYD's GreenCity buses have been deployed in commercial fleets for the last two years, accumulating over 14 million miles. The project at the University of Utah is funded by a Federal Transit Administration grant awarded to the Utah Transit Authority.
