Bus Eireann, the company that operates public bus services in the majority of Ireland, has deployed a natural gas-powered unit to test the vehicle's performance and ascertain fuel-cost savings.

In partnership with natural gas utility Bord Gais Networks, the bus is operating across a number of city routes in Cork through August, the company says. The vehicle, which is manufactured by MAN Truck & Bus AG, refuels at Bus Eireann's Capwell Road depot in Cork.

"Travelling by bus and coach is already one of the most environmentally friendly ways to travel, and natural gas-powered buses have the potential to deliver further energy efficiencies," says Martin Nolan, CEO of Bus Eireann. "This pilot is one of a range of energy management initiatives that we are undertaking to help the environment and reduce our costs."

Following the completion of the trial, Bus Eireann will evaluate the performance of the vehicle and, if it proves successful, will look to purchase natural gas-powered vehicles for use in public service.
