Solid waste industry leader Republic Services says it is deploying 72 compressed natural gas (CNG) trucks in its St. Louis area fleet, at a cost of approximately $25 million.

‘While there is a significant up-front financial commitment involved in our switch to compressed natural gas, the long-term environmental and economic benefits merit the change,’ says Tim Trost, area president for Republic Services.

Republic Services recently committed to making nearly 70% of its new vehicle purchases for 2012 natural gas vehicles (NGVs). By the end of 2015, the company will have more than 3,100 trucks nationwide running on natural gas and other alternative fuels.

The company's 313-truck St. Louis fleet serves in excess of 200,000 households and more than 27,000 commercial and industrial accounts.
