James Madison University, in partnership with Virginia Clean Cities, has completed the deployment of 12 vehicles that were converted to run on propane autogas, and five additional conversions are in the works.

The school's newspaper, The Breeze, reported that these dozen vehicles – which included a pair of university police cars – received Prins VSI bi-fuel propane autogas systems at a cost of about $5,000 per vehicle. The installations themselves were approximately $1,500 each.

James Madison University's fleet acquires propane autogas for $1.79 per gallon. The rate for gasoline, by comparison, is currently $3.18 per gallon.

The university's propane conversions were a part of the Southeast Propane Autogas Development Program, which recently wrapped up the last of its work.
