Trucking Firm Ready to Dip Back into Dual-Fuel Natural Gas

Meerdink Trucking Inc., an interstate carrier based in Iowa, will be working with natural gas vehicle conversion specialist Baker Electromotive Inc. to expand its deployment of dual-fuel natural gas heavy-duty trucks.

Earlier this year, Meerdink engaged in pilot-scale operations with Baker's DNG 100 platform: a dual-fuel diesel and compressed natural gas (CNG) offering that pairs new or used Freightliner Class 8 gliders with Landi Renzo USA's EPA-certified conversion technology. The conversions are performed on remanufactured pre-EGR Detroit Diesel S60 12.7-liter engines and use Quantum's Q-Lite Type 4 back-of-cab CNG tanks. Landi Renzo offers a limited three-year/300,000-mile warranty with its system.

Company president Scott Meerdink says the testing of the DNG 100 platform yielded ‘optimum fuels savings, driving range and productivity.’

‘We are now ordering our second round of DNG systems from Baker and have plans for additional DNG trucks,’ he notes.
