Fleet Sustainability Program Rolled out by NAFA, CALSTART

NAFA Fleet Management Association, in conjunction with clean-transportation nonprofit CALSTART, has launched a new sustainability accreditation program to encourage fleet fuel efficiency and improved emissions.

The Sustainable Fleet Accreditation Program features a four-tier rating system that evaluates fleets based on their environmental performance.

‘With this new program, fleets will be able to measure, manage and improve,’ explains Bill Van Amburg, senior vice president of CALSTART. ‘Fleets start at any level of activity – the point is to start down the path: first by base lining where they are, then by validating their progress, and finally, by benchmarking themselves against rigorous standards and the actions of their peers.’

The program directly complements the U.S. Department of Energy's National Fleet Partnership program and other federal efforts by setting meaningful sustainability targets and recognizing fleets in achieving them, says NAFA.

The NAFA standard can be applied to fleets of all sizes and types. CALSTART provided technical assistance and worked with NAFA to develop the standards and will continue to work with NAFA to manage and implement the program on an ongoing basis.

‘The environmental and rating system for buildings known as LEED has established some clear guidelines and encouraged strong voluntary action in the built environment. We hope these standards have a similar impact on the fleet sector,’ says John Boesel, president and CEO of CALSTART.
