Sunoco Assumes Development Lead on CNG Station

The development of a compressed natural gas (CNG) refueling facility in Chambersburg, Pa., has shifted to Philadelphia-based petroleum and retail gasoline company Sunoco after the originally contracted CNG station developer was unable to secure the necessary real estate and customer commitments in the borough.

In February, Pennsylvania-based firm O-Ring CNG Fuel Systems LP – which already operates successful CNG sites in the state – was selected to lead the development of the CNG station in Chambersburg. But the company's agreement with the borough stipulated that O-Ring would break ground by June 1 – which didn't happen.

‘Unfortunately, through no fault of their own, it's been difficult for them to get it off the ground,’ Borough Manager Jeffrey Stonehill told the Chambersburg Public Opinion.

The project was slated to be built on a site near Interstate 81, but O-Ring could not attain an ownership interest in the needed real estate by the recent deadline. The receipt of Pennsylvania state grant funds supporting the project is contingent upon reaching certain milestones and making progress on the project.

Sunoco, on the other hand, already owns property within the borough, near the intersection of Orchard Dr. and Route 11, according to documents. The ownership of this property puts Sunoco in a more tenable position to develop the CNG station within the prescribed time frame.
